SeaWorld Launches Shamu Twitter

Shamu TwitterSeaWorld’s Shamu is on Twitter. You can follow Shamu on Twitter at @RealShamu. Shamu’s bio says “I live at SeaWorld. I’m a large, athletic, black and white marine mammal. I’m not THE star of SeaWorld, I’m A star of SeaWorld.” A real person is behind the Shamu Twitter just like a real person was behind the Mars Phoenix Twitter that was very popular last year.

When blogging starting getting more commercial several years ago there were many character blogs that emerged. Twitter seems like a much better format for character blogs because of the shorter post length and because it is easier for the character to interact with Twitter users.

No Twitter in Zac Efron’s Future

Zac Efron is the Future

Zac Efron may be the future but he isn’t embracing social media. Zac Efron told People that he doesn’t actually want people to know what he is doing all the time.

“I don’t have a Twitter, a MySpace or a Facebook or anything like that,” says the star of the new comedy 17 Again. “I kind of value in people not knowing where I am or what I’m doing.”

To demonstrate his take on the typical posting, he says with a laugh: “I’m on the toilet. Still on the toilet. Guys, dot-dot-dot, out of TP. Still on the toilet.”

There may not be much reason for Zac Efron to be on Twitter right now since pretty much every step he makes is already covered. Other stars using social media tools like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook like the ability to get out ahead of - or repudiate - what the tabloids and blogs are reporting.

Twitter’s Suggested Users List is Part of Mainstream Push

Twitter Suggested UsersTwitter recently added a list of suggested users and some of the users and organizations on the list are said to be adding 10,000 followers are day. Some of these followers won’t be very useful since they are just bored newbies bulk following the entire list but overall it’s a big benefit to the people and organizations listed. The concept is very similar to the recommended feeds (bundled feeds) on services like Bloglines and Google Reader.

There has been a backlash from some Twitter users in the tech community. The argument is that the suggested users list gives certain Twitter accounts too much popularity and boosts some Twitter users that have not been using Twitter nearly as long as some users who have been on Twitter since it began. It is probably unfair to users that have been on Twitter since the beginning but Twitter’s goal was never to be just a tool for the tech community or for early adapters.

Twitter has always had every intention of going mainstream. The fact that they did not sell either to Facebook or Google is a sign that they intend to get very big, very quickly. One way to do this is to showcase some of the most popular users of Twitter. The big celebrities. The big mainstream users. The leaders in different niches. They want these users to have lots and lots of followers so they will tell others about Twitter. They want to use these big fish to lure in other big fish. They also want the mainstream media to start keeping track of these big celebrity Twitters.

It was inevitable that celebrity Twitter users like Shaq and Britney Spears would probably have ridiculous amounts of Twitter followers. By including them in the Suggested Users list Twitter is probably just fast-forwarding what would have eventually happened anyway. Twitter wanted this to happen or they never would have put so many celebrities in the list. Some of the tech blogs and niche blogs in other categories have a good argument that Twitter is being unfair by putting competiting blogs on the Suggested Users list and thereby granting them tons of followers. But it’s nothing new. Those bundled feeds put together by RSS aggregators have never really been completely fair either.

Celebrities on Twitter

Twitter has many uses. You can keep up with friends, you can keep up with the latest news updates and you can search Twitter to see what people are thinking about just about anything. One of the more recent Twitter trends that is emerging is celebrities using twitter. Some of the celebrity Twitterers are starting to take over the top slots on Twitterholic, a list of twitter users with the most followers that used to be dominated by technology broadcasters and bloggers.

Is Twitter Search a Threat to Google?

Chris O’Brien at the Mercury News has an article about how Twitter’s search tool could ultimately be a threat to Google.

Very quietly, one of Twitter’s most powerful applications has become its ability to allow people to conduct real-time searches.

In fact, the motto posted on Twitter’s search page (http://search.twitter.com) says, “See what’s happening - right now.” And many people do exactly that. During a live event or amid breaking news, a growing number of people are turning to Twitter search to follow the conversations among its users.

How much the behavior is growing is hard to say, since Twitter is privately held and doesn’t release such figures. But the company thought enough of its potential to acquire a small New York company called Summize, a group of five engineers, which had built the Twitter search technology. Summize’s site was folded into Twitter last summer.

Twitter’s acquisition of Summize last year was a good move and greatly improved Twitter. The search tool can be very useful to find out about current events or breaking news although there have been complaints about a lack of more advanced queries. It doesn’t really seem like much of a threat to Google’s main search. It seems like more of a Technorati or Google Blog Search threat. It is potentially a threat to news searchers like Google News and Yahooo News if people decide to dump those tools in favor of Twitter’s search.
