The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies, $0.00
Every now and again a book comes along to which all other books pale in comparison...The Welsh Girl is one of those books. Set in Wales just after D-Day, the reader is introduced to young Esther Evans. Esther has lived in Wales all her life and longs for escape; therefore it is no surprise when she finds herself drawn to the young English soldiers constructing a POW camp near her home. Her involvement with one of the soldiers will change her life forever, as will her involvement with one of the prisoners. The themes of love, war, nationalism, family duty, and honor are beautifully presented in this superbly crafted and highly readable novel.
Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer, $0.00
I couldn’t put this one down, not only was the story of the Lafferty brothers captivatingly spooky, but the insight he provides into the Mormon faith was extremely interesting.
Encounters With The Archdruid by John McPhee, $0.00
McPhee observed former Sierra Club director David Brower with a mining geologist, a developer, and a dam builder; setting up strong debates on both sides of important Conservation issues.
White Noise by Don DeLillo, $0.00
This compact, profound winner of the National Book Award considers marriage, parenting, love and death. Funny and moving, heady without being overly intellectual, this is a great introduction to DeLillo.
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang, $0.00
Beautifully written memoir of the lives of three women in 20th Century China. The grandmother, a warlord’s concubine, the mother, a Maoist, the daughter, the first person from China to receive a PhD from Britain.
In the Deep Heart's Core by Michael Johnston, $0.00
I read this book to support a young, local author and was extremely pleased that I LOVED the book. Michael, fresh out of Yale, joins Teach for America and goes to the rural Mississippi Delta to teach high school English. There are heartbreaking stories and it looks like Michael will lose the battle against deprivation, drugs, despondency, apathy, misbehavior, and more. But Michael doesn’t give up and the results will make you clap for joy!
